"For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him."
Isaiah 64:4
“For since the beginning of the world men have not heard,”
Since the world began, men have not heard from any other God but the Creator, for there is no other God but Him. And the good news is that He has revealed Himself to all men.
“Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse (Romans 1:19-20).[1]
But since the world began, men have not heard…
“Nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen,”
No one has heard or seen this glorious truth.
Paul “quoted” Isaiah’s words.
“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).
It is only those who know Christ that can realize this truth.
“O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.”
The blessings spoken of are for those who “wait for God.” When we are tempted to run ahead of the Lord, and do what we think is best, without considering Him, we need to stop and wait. Remember that the blessing is given to those who are waiting for Him![2]
“Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield” (Psalm 33:20).
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary, and they shall walk, and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31).
This year lets be quick to wait upon Him and listen to Him speak through His Word. If we are too busy to stop and wait on the Lord, we are too busy. Let’s begin our day with Him and listen for Him throughout our waking hours.
[1] We’ve borrowed two verses out of a four-verse sentence. See vv. 18-21.
[2] Here are other passages that speak of God’s blessing on those who wait for Him. Psalm 37:9; Psalm 123:2; Isaiah 8:17; Jeremiah 14:22; Zephaniah 3:8.
