"Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?"
Exodus 15:11
The setting of our verse for the day is right after Moses has led the Children of Israel out of the land of Egypt. God opened the Red Sea and let His people pass through on dry ground. Pharaoh, thinking better of his decision to let God’s people leave, chased after them with his army, only to see them drowned when they tried to follow Moses through the sea. God made the waters go back to their place, and that was the end of Pharaoh’s army and chariots.
The catalyst to persuade Pharaoh to let the Children of Israel go was when God sent His death angel through the country to kill all the firstborn of Egypt. The only exceptions were those who applied the blood of the lamb on their lentil and doorposts as a sign that they believed in Jehovah. All those without the blood on their door had their firstborn son perish that night, including Pharaoh. That night was the first “Passover.” God did as He said He would.
“For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD,” (Exodus 12:12).
As Israel celebrated freedom, Moses penned this song, Exodus 15:1-19.
“Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods?
The answer to this question is of course, “no one!” There is none like God. All the insignificant “little g” gods of the Egyptians were nothing compared to Jehovah! Who was Osiris, “god of the Nile” compared with the One who could turn the river waters into blood? Who was Set, “the earth god”? He had no control over the gnats, but Jehovah did. What could Hathor—the “goddess with a cow head”; or Apis—”the bull god (fertility)”; or Khnum—”the ram-god” do when Jehovah sent cattle disease to the livestock of the Egyptians? Nothing!
The Egyptians were polytheistic, but their many gods were impotent and helpless before the living God, Jehovah! All of Israel and Egypt had seen the showdown, and the “gods” of the Egyptians failed miserably in the presence of Jehovah. “Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? No one!
“Who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?”
How will God’s Word answer this question?
“Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any
works like unto thy works,” (Psalm 86:8).
“For all the gods of the people are idols: but the LORD made the heavens,”
(1 Chronicles 16:26).
“For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods,” (Psalm 95:3).
“For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all
gods. For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the
heavens,” (Psalm 96:4-5).
“For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all
gods,” (Psalm 97:9).
“For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods, (Psalm
135:5).
“O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever,” (Psalm
136:2).
David said, “Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears,” (2 Samuel 7:22).
Is this God, your God?
I learn from this verse today that My God is The Only God!
