"In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God."
John 1:1-2
Part 2
Yesterday:
“In the beginning.”
Before time, in eternity past. Before the creation of the world and all that is in it.
“Was the Word.”
The Word was in existence before creation.
“And the Word was with God.”
The Word existed before the creation with God the Father.
Today:
“And the Word was God.”
The Living Word is God.
“It implies, therefore, that he was partaker of the divine glory; that he was blessed and happy with God. It proves that he was intimately united with the Father, so as to partake of his glory and to be appropriately called by the name God. He has himself explained it” [1] (Barnes).
Note the simple logic of our verse. Guzik points out John’s thinking.
“With this brilliant statement, John 1:1 sets forth one of the most basic foundations of our faith – the Trinity. We can follow John’s logic:[2]
• There is a Being known as the Word.
• This Being is God, because He is eternal (In the beginning)
• This Being is God, because He is plainly called God (the Word was God).
• At the same time, this Being does not encompass all that God is. God the Father is a distinct Person from the Word (the Word was with God) (Guzik).
“The same was in the beginning with God.”
The Father and the Word were together before the beginning, meaning that the Word already existed with the Father before time began. The point is that the Word was already here before Bethlehem and the Incarnation and Virgin Birth. He was previously a “person” of the godhead, for He was God.
The Word is further identified for us.
“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).
Jesus is the Word. Jesus is God in human flesh, the Redeemer. Do you know Him personally?
