The Breath of Life

Thank you, Lord, for your gift of life, by your breath.

"Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein."

Isaiah 42:5

“Thus saith God the LORD,”
When we read the Word of God, it is of vital importance that we know who is speaking in any given passage we study.  Not just who is talking, but who is being spoken too.  In other words, who does the passage apply to in its primary meaning?  These are basic rules in our study of the Bible.  In verses 1-4, the Father has been speaking about His Son, the Messiah.  And in verses 5-7 He speaks to His Son.  And He makes it plain who He is addressing so that we will understand what He is saying about His Son, Jesus, who is the great Creator.  Let’s park on verse 5 for a few moments today.

His Son, Jesus, who is the Creator, made the heavens!
“He that created the heavens, and stretched them out;”

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

“Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him [Jesus] were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist” (Colossians 1:15-17).

His Son, Jesus, is who laid out the earth, and cares for it.
“He that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it;”

“And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good” (Genesis 1:21).

“And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so” (Genesis 1:24).

His Son has given breath to the people on His earth, and His Spirit.
“He that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein.”

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and overall the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:26-28).

“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7).

He not only made the earth and everything on it, but He sustains it and cares for His creation.  And He cares for you!

Dear Lord, thank you for your gift of life, by your breath.
