"Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me inWhen we learrnto the land of uprightness."
Psalm 143:10
Part 2
Yesterday:
“Teach me to do thy will.”
Every time David asked God to teach him something, it was with a learner’s spirit, and he was ready to obey.
“For thou art my God.”
David obeyed God because he trusted Him wholly and clearly.
Today:
“Thy spirit is good.”
Amen! This is true!
“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).
The prophet Nehemiah spoke of God’s kindness to Israel and His “good spirit to instruct them.”
“Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst” (Nehemiah 9:20).
“‘Thy Spirit is good,’ and therefore the trusting spirit has a right to ask to be made good likewise. The relation of the believing spirit to God not only obliges God to teach it His will, but to make it partaker of His own image and conformed to His own purity.”[1] (MacLaren).
Today one of the many duties that the Holy Spirit fulfills is teaching us. He uses His “Sword,” the Word of God, to point us to our Lord Jesus Christ.
“But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me” (John 15:26).
“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for He shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you” (John 16:13-14).
“God is all spirit and all good. His essence is goodness, kindness, holiness’ it is his nature to do good, and what greater good can he do to us than to hear such a prayer as that which follows – ‘Lead me into the land of uprightness’?”[2] (Spurgeon).
“Lead me into the land of uprightness.”
“Lead me.” David shows us what it means to be dependent upon the Lord. He knew that his own way was not good enough. He needed God always in his life.
“Land of uprightness.”
“…literally, ‘an even land’” [3] (JFB).
“…let thy good spirit lead me in a level land.” [4]
“My foot standeth in an even place: in the congregations will I bless the LORD” (Psalm 26:12).
Whenever David seemed to be shaken, out of sorts, and on uneven footing, he turned to His God, and the LORD leveled the playing field for him. Whether he was facing a giant, or outnumbered by other impossible enemies, he knew that his LORD would even things up.
“In any situation, God and you make the majority” (Anon).
“…The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1).
My obedience to Him opens the way for Him to teach me His will, and He demonstrates to me how good He is. My God is leading me in His path for me. PTL!
Quote: “Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, always” (Deuteronomy 11:1).
