"Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness."
Psalm 143:10
Part 1
“Teach me to do thy will.”
David did not ask God to give him an easy life or to make things comfortable or agreeable for him. He wasn’t even asking for any special favors. He was plainly asking God to teach him what He wanted him to do. We understand that he was not acting as the mercenary who checks out the deal first to see if it is suitable and then decides to accept or reject it. No, David is asking God to teach him so that he could be faithful and do what He wants. At this point in his life, he was at a loss to know what he should do. He asked for instructions to learn God’s expectation, and he will honor whatever that is. It is as if he said, “LORD, please tell me what you want me to do in this present danger (v. 3), and I will obey you!”
“Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies” (Psalm 27:11).
David was living a life of total trust in his LORD. “You teach me LORD, and I will obey you! I will do all that you tell me to do.”
“I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart” (Psalm 40:8).
Believers, how is it with us? Do we have David’s kind of teachable, obedient, spirit? Are we willing to give God a blank piece of paper, and ask Him to fill out His will for us, and whatever he says, we will do it?
“For thou art my God.”
Because David knew his God so well, he knew that he could trust Him, no matter what.
“But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my God” (Psalm 31:14).
David knew that his God would never leave him in his time of need, or any other time, for that matter. His words here, “Thou art my God,” show us the personal bond between himself and God. It is because of this “bond” that David asks Him to teach him His will.
“Thou hast given me thyself, thou wilt surely give me thy teaching. If I have thee, may I not ask to have thy perfect mind? When the heart can sincerely call Jehovah ‘my God,’ the understanding is ready to learn of him, the will is prepared to obey him, the whole man is eager to please him”[1] (Spurgeon).
Believers, is our goal to please the Lord, bring glory to Him, and further His Kingdom? It ought to be! Come back tomorrow, and let’s learn more.
