"But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage: neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection."
Luke 20:35-36
That day when the Sadducees came to ask Jesus their question about marriage after the resurrection, He answered them very directly. Luke gives us some more valuable information about the resurrection in his Gospel.
“But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead.”
Jesus made it very clear about marriage. “The children of this world marry and are given in marriage” (Luke 20:34). Meaning, of course, that marriage is only for this life here on earth.
Jesus let it be known that “they which shall be accounted worthy,” these are any Old Testament saints and New Testament believers in heaven (“that world”). It is these then who are resurrected from the dead, and they are no longer married to the earthly spouse.
And let’s be clear here, any “worthiness” that we have is not because of us but because of Jesus and His righteousness. He is the one who makes the lost sinner worthy of being a saint.
“Neither marry, nor are given in marriage.”
God has ordained marriage so that humans can lawfully perpetuate the human race. In heaven, that is no longer needed. Relationships there will be completely different from what we understand here on earth. From this side, we cannot fully understand what God has waiting for us on the other side. But it will be glorious and enjoyable to be with Christ forever.
“Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels.”
NO MORE DEATH for God’s children! There, in our post-resurrection bodies, we will be immortal as are the angels. Here on this earth now, we still live under the sin-death principle. But in eternity future, that principle will be no more! Praise God!
“And are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.”
Being “the children of the resurrection,” we also will have begun to experience the “glorious liberty” of un-decaying bodies.
“Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God” (Romans 8:21).
Here on this earth, we redeemed believers can only wait patiently for this time to come.
“And not only they but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body” (Romans 8:23).
“Praise God from whom all blessings flow!” He cares for us now, and He will care for us in eternity!
