"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
Romans 6:23
Part 4
Yesterday:
“Is eternal life.”
God graciously provides eternal life to forgiven sinners.
“Through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (a)
God sent His only Son, Jesus, to make the salvation gift possible for sinners. Jesus is the perfect sacrifice for my terrible sin debt!
Today:
“Through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (b)
God’s law demands that our sin must be paid for with blood! There is only one person who could take our place on the cross. Jesus is the perfect Lamb of God and was born to be our substitute, the sacrifice for our sin. If He did not pay for my sin, I would have to pay for it myself – that is what “eternal death” is, the sinner eternally paying for his/her sin. But the Lord Jesus went to the Cross in our place.
“Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot” (1 Peter 1:18-19).
God the Father gave us His Son Jesus, to be sacrificed and to shed His blood on the cross for our sin.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
“And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life, and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life (1 John 5:11-12).
Jesus died for us! He paid the price of our sin-debt. Jesus never sinned, and when He died, it was for you and me that He gave up His life.
“As thou hast given him [Jesus] power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (John 17:2-3).
This is the “good news,” it tells how we sinners may acquire this eternal life. During their preaching visit to Philippi, Paul and Silas had been jailed illegally. During the night, there was an earthquake that opened the jail. After the jailer learned that no one had escaped, he asked these preacher-prisoners a vital question.
“And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house” (Acts 16:30-31).
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).
God’s gift of eternal life is given to sinners who believe in what Jesus Christ has done for them on the cross. Those who believe and trust in Him “have the Son,” and they “have life.”
Dear friend, have you called on Jesus’ name to save your soul?
Quote: Jesus said, “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14).
