My Defense

God has the power to defend us and the mercy to take care of us in our need.  Call on Him!

"But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defense and refuge in the day of my trouble."

Psalm 59:16

David certainly knows what it is like to be the hunted.  Psalm 59 includes his thoughts as King Saul has sent out men to hunt him down and kill him.  This psalm speaks of God’s power to defend him from those who are intent on bringing him harm.  God is faithful in His mercy to David.

“But I will sing of thy power;”
David is quick to praise Jehovah for His great strength.  The ancient word translated as “power,” means “might, strength.”  It can refer to “material or physical” strength, or even “personal or social or political” power.  This word suggests that whatever the need is, God can deal with it.

“Because of his strength will I wait upon thee: for God is my defense,” (Psalm 59:9).

“Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defense, and the God of my mercy,” (Psalm 59:17).

“Yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning:”
When God has provided safety through another night, and allowed no harm to us, that’s reason enough to praise Him in the morning.  The fact that God is faithful and willing to grant us mercy for another day is awesome!  We will shout this out for others to hear, not for our sakes, but for His mercy’s sake.

“It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness,” (Lamentations 3:22-23).

“My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up,” (Psalm 5:3).

“For thou hast been my defense and refuge in the day of my trouble.”
Note the verb here, “hast been.”  The Lord “has been” my defense, this is nothing new, but it is a sure thing that we have experienced over and over again.  His faithfulness to defend us in the past increases our faith and encourages us that He will defend us in the future also.  He is our defense, our “high tower.”  He is our place of refuge that we may run into and be safe.  We may trust Him to be there to help us.  What is your need today?  Run to Him!
