"For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of His mouth cometh knowledge and understanding."
Proverbs 2:6
“The LORD is the source of wisdom; knowledge and understanding come from His mouth” [1] (Proverbs 2:6, HSB).
Knowing the source makes all the difference for everyone looking for wisdom. A person may search for a long time without ever finding God’s wisdom. That is unless they know the all-wise source for it. And they need to understand the secret of getting wisdom from God –
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (James 1:5).
God is the “source,” and asking Him for it prepares the heart for receiving wisdom from Him. And the promise is clear, “it shall be given him!”
“For the LORD giveth wisdom.”
Please note that wisdom cannot be taken, only given and received. And the source is God alone!
“Wisdom is not something a man takes but that the Lord gives through his words, which in this case Solomon is inspired to speak (2:1)” [2] (CSB).
“Wisdom comes from Yahweh, the only one who fully understands it and knows its origins (Job 28:23–28)” [3] (FSB).
“God understandeth the way thereof, and He knoweth the place thereof. For He looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven; To make the weight for the winds, and He weigheth the waters by measure. When He made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder: Then did He see it, and declare it; He prepared it, yea, and searched it out. And unto man He said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding” (Job 28:23-28).
The LORD is the source of wisdom!
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7).
“For the Lord gives wisdom: This explains why the fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom and an essential aspect of the pursuit of wisdom. True wisdom is found in Him, and He gives it” [4] (EWC).
“Out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.”
The revealed truth from the Lord’s mouth is the wisdom we need every day!
“As a person fears the Lord, he gains wisdom, knowledge (cf. Proverbs 1:4; 2:10), and understanding (cf. vv. 2–3, 11)” [5] (BKC).
“The most significant way God gives wisdom is from the words of His mouth. His Word reveals knowledge and understanding. In His Word, He stores up sound wisdom for the upright” [6] (EWC).
Quote: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth forever” (Psalm 111:10).
