"My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee."
Proverbs 3:1-2
Part 1
“My son.”
At least twenty-three times in the book of Proverbs, Solomon speaks directly to his son. This excellent book is the wisdom of a father who is passing on to his son, what God has taught him during his lifetime. It is a wise son who will listen to his father and take what is said, heart to heart.
In our day of high-tech gadgets and instant information dumps, we can go online and find an incredible amount of information. But genuine, godly wisdom is difficult to get there. The scriptures teach us that the flow of wisdom is passed on from grandparents to parents, to their children, and to their children’s children (Psalm 78). We dare not forget this simple truth of the Bible, and parents cannot afford to abandon our obligation of personally training our child. Parents are their child’s best teacher!
“Forget not my law.”
Can you hear Solomon saying to his boy, “Son, remember this, you will need this lesson in life.”
“Hear ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye, not my law” (Proverbs 4:1-2).
“My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother: Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck” (Proverbs 6:20-21).
“My son, keep my words and lay up my commandments with thee. Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye” (Proverbs 7:1-2).
An important thought for children: Listen to your parents with your eyes, ears, hearts, and hands! You will need their teaching later in life. There will be a test!
Will a child carry all their parent’s rules into their own homes later as they marry and establish their own home? No. Come back tomorrow, and we will figure out why.
Quote: “Peace is such a precious jewel that I would give anything for it, but truth”[1] (Matthew Henry).
