"For my mouth shall speak truth, and wickedness is an abomination to my lips."
Proverbs 8:7
“For my mouth shall speak truth;”
What a blessing it would be to live in a world where every Child of God spoke only the truth. We could know that what we were told is the truth. There would be no need for suspicion because we would only hear words that are correct and mean what they implied.
This is a great motto for every believer, “My mouth shall speak the truth!”
“My mouth shall speak truth…, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, for it is a testimony to the world”1 (Henry).
If this lost world is to hear the truth, it ought to be from the mouths of God’s Children.
“And wickedness is an abomination to my lips.”
“Wickedness” in this verse is lying. A lie is “the intent to deceive.” It is the opposite of the truth. There are no shades of a lie. Either it is entirely true, or it is a lie, there is no middle ground. Deception tries to keep the truth from being known, while the truth prevents deception, it will not allow it to be. Lying is ungodly and un-God-like. It is a sin.
An “abomination” is something that is very “disgusting.” It is the kind of thing that smells so bad that it can make a person vomit. A lie should be an “abomination” to us. It is so awful, ugly, and disgusting that it is nauseating. It is to God.
“These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren” (Proverbs 6:16-19).
“Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight” (Proverbs 12:22).
Believers, we should be cautious about being dishonest.
“Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another” (Ephesians 4:25).
