How to Wake Up on the Right Side of the Bed (1 of 4)

What a great way to begin the day!  Spend time with the Lord in prayer each morning.

"My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up."

Psalm 5:3

Part 1

Today:  Speaking to the LORD in the Morning

In Psalm 5, David is asking God for His security and leading in his life.  David was burdened to tell the LORD of his need.  Three times at the beginning of his Psalm, he asked God to listen to him.

Give ear to my words (v. 1).
Consider my meditation (v. 1).
Hearken unto the voice of my cry (v. 2).

David said to God –

“My voice shalt thou hear in the morning.”
From David’s voice came prayer the first thing in the morning.  Believers, what does God hear from your voice the first thing in the morning when you wake up?  Does He hear your gripes and complaints because you are in a bad mood?  Does He have to listen to the residue of that spat you had with your spouse last night?  Is this really how you want to begin this new day God has given to you?

While growing up in our home, one of my sons, as a teen, had a challenging time getting up in the morning and having the right spirit about him.  And a few times, he was asked to leave the breakfast table.  He was sent back to his bedroom to adjust his attitude before returning to the table to join the family. ?

“My Voice”

This ancient Hebrew word for “voice” is found at least fifty-nine times in the Psalms.  This comes from a root word that means, “…to call aloud; a voice or sound….”  It has many meanings, from a sheep’s bleating to the voice of the thunder (Strong).[1]  But here, David uses his voice to talk with the LORD.

“Shalt thou hear in the morning.”

David tells God that it will be his voice that God will hear in the morning.  Why pray in the morning?  David wanted to give his day to the LORD before it started.  In this simple way, he is honoring his God.  By praying first thing in the morning, it sets the tone and mood for the rest of the day.  Don’t we want to see God working in us and through us today?  Do not wait for your family or neighbors, or teachers or boss to set the tone for your day for you!  Believers, let’s follow David’s example.  When we wake up, even while we are still in bed, before our feet hit the floor, this is a great time to pause and take a moment and talk with God and give our day to Him.  Let’s ask Him for His direction, help, and wisdom throughout this new day, even before we are out of bed.

This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24).

Here is a basic idea, but who do we pray to?  Come back tomorrow, and we will try to learn more from David’s thoughts.

Quote:  “My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.  Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp:  I myself will awake early.  I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people:  I will sing unto thee among the nations.  For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds.  Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens:  let thy glory be above all the earth” (Psalm 57:7-11).
