How to Wake Up on the Right Side of the Bed (2 of 4)

What a great way to begin the day!  Spend time with the Lord in prayer each morning.

June 2, 2021

"My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up."

Psalm 5:3

Part 2

Yesterday:  Speaking to the LORD in the Morning
“My voice shalt thou hear in the morning.”

We honor the LORD with our voice each morning when we awaken.

Today:  It is the LORD We Pray To

“O, LORD.”

Who is the only One that can meet our needs?  Will it be the rich man who seems to have an endless supply of money?  Will it be the surgeon who is skilled at his healing craft?  Will it be the president who saves us and meets all our needs as citizens?  Or will it be our neighbor or our brothers and sisters in Christ at our church who protect us?  No, my friend, no human being can save us or even meet our actual needs.  Oh, people might give you a hand in your immediate rescue, but please remember who it is that meets your needs.  It is only God who can give us what we really require.

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).

Only God can do for us what we really need!  So why then do we look to people for help and not to God?  Don’t you know that “people’s assistance” usually has strings attached to it?  David understood that people could not meet the real needs that we have.  Twice he said this,

“Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man” (Psalm 60:11).
“Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man” (Psalm 108:12).

Is it because you can see people, but you cannot see God that you ask people and not God for help?  Please be assured that God is there, and yes, He will often use people to help you immediately, but remember, God is the One who is suppling your aid.  It is God who is all-powerful and kind.  So rather than going to people first, let’s go to God and ask Him to supply, and then we watch for Him to work.  He then gets the credit and the glory!

David said that he would go to the LORD in the morning, and we get the impression from these words that he will go to God every morning.

Notice in verse 1 that David asked God to consider “my meditation.”  This is not “meditating on the Bible” as we think of biblical meditation today.  What David meant by “meditation” is his “whisper, musing, murmuring” (BDB).  He kept turning over his problem in his head, and in this deep need, he expresses his “meditation” in little more than a groan.  And he correctly turns his groaning, his sigh, into spoken prayer.[1]

Biblical prayer is “directed prayer.”  Please come back and learn with us tomorrow more about prayer.

Quote:  “We should never worry about anything because God said that He would supply all our needs according to His riches in Heaven.  All we have to do ask, seek and knock.  Matthew 7:7. Remember, God already knows what we need before we ask”[2] (V. Smith).

[1] The ESV says, “consider my groaning.”  The BBC says, “give thought to my heart-searchings.”  The BES says, “attend to my cry.”  Though David’s problem is deep and even soul-searching, he turns his sighs into prayer, and he tells the LORD of his need.
