How Do I Love My Brothers in Christ? (Part 2 of 2)

My heart looks out for the good of others!

January 5, 2021

"Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another."

Romans 12:10

Part 2

Yesterday:  People and My Affections

“Be kindly affectioned.”
Believers have a genuine love for their spiritual kin!

Today:  Honor and Preferring Others

“One to another with brotherly love.”
The love of family is to be unique for the believer.

“…Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1).

Jesus Christ has made us one, and we are to hold high the truth of the Word and rally around our Lord and His Word!

“In honor.”
We are careful about how we treat our brethren.  We honor those we value, and we are to honor those who belong to God.  We don’t follow the voice of the one who can yell the loudest, but we do follow those who lead as Jesus did.  When are given the opportunity to lead, Jesus is our example of the servant leader.  We respect each other in Christ.

“But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister” (Matthew 20:26).

“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves” (Philippians 2:3).

Honor all men.  Love the brotherhood.  Fear God.  Honor the king” (1 Peter 2:17).

“Preferring one another.”
Putting others first.  Our goal is to put others first before ourselves, but how do we do this?

“Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder.  Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble” (1 Peter 5:5).

Humility wins the day in our dealings with our believing family.

Quote:

Others[1]
By Charles Meigs

Lord, help me live from day to day
In such a self-forgetful way
That even when I kneel to pray
My prayer shall be for others.

Refrain:
Yes, others, Lord, yes, others,
Let this my motto be;
Help me to live for others,
Help me to live for others,
That I may live like Thee,
That I may live like Thee.

Help me in all the work I do
To ever be sincere and true,
And know that all I’d do for You
Must needs be done for others.

Let “Self” be crucified and slain
And buried deep: and all in vain
May efforts be to rise again,
Except to live for others.

So when my work on earth is done,
And my new work in heav’n’s begun,
I’ll praise You for the crown I’ve won,
But praise You more for others.
