“Honor Thy Father and Mother” (Part 2)

Be careful what you say about your mom and dad—God is listening!

"For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death."

Matthew 15:4

Part 2

Yesterday:
“For God commanded,”
Jesus said this is what God commanded. We had better take Jesus’ words seriously.

“Saying, Honour thy father and mother:”
Our parents deserve our honor because they are our parents!

Today:
“And, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.”
Please remember that Jesus Christ Himself was repeating the Law.  The Law protected parents in the Old Testament, and it had harsh punishments for the abusers of parents.  If Moses law was the Law of the land today, I’m afraid there would be a lot fewer young people left alive.  This Law penalized those who cursed their parents.

“And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death” (Exodus 21:17).

“For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him” (Leviticus 20:9).

“Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen” (Deuteronomy 27:16).

And even in Solomon’s day, those who disobeyed and mocked their parents were under a curse.

“The eye that mocketh at his father and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it” (Proverbs 30:17).

God has not changed what He has said about us disrespecting or disobeying our parents.  He is still earnest about children honoring their parents.  He hasn’t changed His mind about a child’s responsibility toward his/her parents.

Parents and grandparents, we need to work harder at these lessons in our homes.  Please continue to teach and model for your child how you honor your own spouse.  They need to see how you treat as valuable, his or her mom or dad.  Will they ever learn to honor God if they are allowed to dishonor their parents?

Believers, how are you treating your parents?
