"Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?"
Exodus 15:11
Part 3
Yesterday: Our God is Higher Than all Other Beings!
“Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods?”
No one! There are no gods anywhere out there that can outdo, outthink, or overtake our God. “There are none like thee!”
Today: There Is No One Like Our God!
David’s testimony of God greatness and care in his prayer of thanks,
“Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears” (2 Samuel 7:22).
“Who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?”
What beautiful words of the character of Jehovah. Let’s look at these thoughts and let the Word speak to us. No one is like God!
He is,
“Glorious in holiness.”
Our God is the holy God, always separate from sin and evil.
“Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?” (Psalm 77:13).
The ideas of holiness and being sanctified are words of “separation.” They both include separation from sin and evil and separation to holiness, righteousness, and goodness.
God is glorious in holiness, meaning “… in loftiness, greatness, unapproachableness, —in a word in all the transcendent attributes which combine to constitute the idea of supreme Godhead…”[1]
Mankind’s sin does not make God less holy, but God’s righteousness through His Son does sanctify sinful people. In Christ, we believers are holy.
He is,
“Fearful in praises.”
How should our holy God be praised?
“Fearful in praises: i.e., to be revered in praising Him for His wondrous acts”[2] (Bullinger).
“Such glorious holiness cannot be approached without the deepest reverence and fear, even by angels, who veil their faces before the majesty of God. How then should man, who is only sin and dust, approach the presence of his Maker!”[3] (Clarke).
We ought to praise Him with the most profound reverence. We fear our holy God. These truths and praises about Him we diligently teach to our children! (Psalm 78:4). And when we are in need, we approach Him in bold humility![4]
Also, God is,
“Doing wonders.”
His works for the Children of Israel were marvelous! The gods cannot compare with Him.
“Among the gods, there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works” (Psalm 86:8).
He is caring and helpful to His creatures, men, women, and children.
“Come and see the works of God: he is terrible in his doing toward the children of men” (Psalm 66:5).
He did great things for His Children of Israel.
“Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan” (Psalm 78:12).
As we walk with the LORD daily, and we observe His hand moving in our lives, may we be able to say with Isaiah,
“O LORD, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth” (Isaiah 25:1).
Quote: “As used in Scripture, holiness describes both the majesty of God and the purity and moral perfection of His nature. Holiness is one of His attributes; that is, holiness is an essential part of the nature of God. His holiness is as necessary as His existence, or as necessary, for example, as His wisdom or omniscience. Just as He cannot but know what is right, so He cannot but do what is right”[5] (Jerry Bridges).
