"Having, therefore, obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles."
Acts 26:22-23
Part 1
After Paul’s arrest for “his own protection” in Jerusalem, as a prisoner, he was moved to the jail in Caesarea, away from the men who wanted his death (Acts 25-26). He was summoned to stand before Felix, the Governor, who would hear his case. Paul gave his side of the issue to Felix, and as a Roman citizen, he had the privilege of appealing his case to Caesar, which he did. Felix had Paul tell his story to King Agrippa, who let Paul speak freely, so Paul preached the Gospel to them. In our verses for today, Paul gave a clear reason for preaching the Gospel to whomever he had the opportunity to preach it.
“Having, therefore, obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:”
The men who sought for Paul’s death, did so because they believed him to be a traitor to the Jewish Law. Paul clearly demonstrated that his message was based on the scriptures (the Law of Moses).
He claimed his work was with the help of God. The Greek term for “help” is much stronger, it means the “alliance” of God. He was working on God’s team allied with God Himself! The reason he had been spared from death is that God protected him.
“Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee” (Acts 26:17)
Paul’s “witnessing both to small and great” is what God had called him to do.
“But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name’s sake” (Acts 9:15-16).
What was the message that Paul was so careful to protect and share with the world? Come back tomorrow, and we will take a closer look at it.
