"Then Simon Peter answered Him, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life."
John 6:68
Part 5
Yesterday:
Teaching His Bread of Life sermon, Jesus taught the people:
God, the Father draws people to Jesus for His “living Bread.”
This “bread of life” must be eaten, partaken, taken in, to provide eternal life. It is not enough to look at the bread, touch it, or smell it. This living bread is to be eaten by faith.
Today:
His sermon results: Jesus saw many of His “disciples” turn away from following Him (John 6:60-66).
“Many, therefore, of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is a hard saying; who can hear it?” (John 6:60).
The Crowd’s Response:
“From that time many of His disciples went back and walked no more with Him” (John 6:66).
Jesus’ way is too hard for them!
His Disciples’ Response: The Eleven
Jesus asked His disciples, Will ye also go away?” (John 6:67).
“Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go?” (John 6:68a-b).
“Whom have I in heaven but thee? And there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee” (Psalm 73:25).
“Thou hast the words of eternal life” (John 6:68c).
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life (John 5:24).
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
“And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life, and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God” (1 John 5:11-13).
Jesus’ twelve disciples will keep following Him, minus one (John 6:66-71).
Judas, the Betrayer’s Response:
“Jesus answered them, ‘Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?’ He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray Him, being one of the twelve” (John 6:70-71).
Following Jesus was just a way to make a buck for himself. He “followed” Jesus, but never partook of the “Bread of Life.” How sad!
Quote: “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? And your labor for that which satisfieth not? Hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David” (Isaiah 55:1-3).
