"But godliness with contentment is great gain."
1 Timothy 6:6
Part 2
Yesterday:
“But godliness.”
Godliness is our goal, and the disciplined life and the basics of spiritual growth can help us find it.
Today:
“With contentment.”
Our godliness needs to be sprinkled with a healthy dose of contentment. God has promised he will take care of the needs of his believers. And we need to trust Him to do what He says He will do for us (see Matthew 6). God is good to take care of His child.
“A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked” (Psalm 37:16).
It can be a problem for a believer who has had a taste of materialism to be content with God’s provision. When we have become accustomed to much, having just our basic needs met can seem like poverty. Although we believers are rich indeed.
“And having food and raiment let us be therewith content” (1 Timothy 6:8).
We can learn the proper attitude from Paul, who grew up with wealth, he knew what it was like to have much, but also to have little.
“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content” (Philippians 4:11).
We need to be satisfied with God’s provision, whether we have much or little. Because this…
“Is great gain.”
For the believer, what “is great gain?” How much is enough?
The possession of God’s wisdom and understanding are of higher value than precious metals.
“Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold” (Proverbs 3:13-14).
Financial gain is not the answer for the believer, but contentment is.
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36).
Dear child of God, having Jesus is all we need, and He is enough for us!
“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21).
He’s all I need,[1]
He’s all I need;
Jesus is all I need.
He’s all I need,
He’s all I need;
Jesus is all I need.
