"I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands."
Psalm 143:5
Part 2
Yesterday:
“I remember the days of old;”
Remembering can help us recall God’s faithfulness in the past. Even painful memories can have a benefit for us as we think about His goodness to us. “Why,” should we remember? Keep reading.
Today:
“I meditate on all thy works;”
Biblical meditation is the practice of rolling God’s truth around in our minds and viewing it from every possible angle until we can see how His grace intersects with our lives.
David let God’s past works roll around in his head so that he saw them from God’s point of view as well as his own. God showed him His grace through His intervention in each of those past events.
As we learn to think about our experiences from God’s perspective, we gain a new appreciation for His work in our lives. He works in us for His glory and for our good.
“I muse on the work of thy hands.”
The Hebrew idea of “muse” includes the thought of carrying on a conversation. David talked to himself about what God had done for him. I would love to hear those conversations! As we think about what God has done for us, we need to give ourselves a good talking too, to remind us of God’s goodness. God is good all the time!
“I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times” (Psalm 77:5).
“And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High” (Psalm 77:10).
“I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old” (Psalm 77:11).
Here’s the “why” we should remember God’s work in our lives. It’s a simple but essential truth. As we look at what God has done for us throughout our lives, it ought to encourage our hearts to realize how much He loves us and show us that He will care for our needs in the present and the future as well. In other words, what God has done before should challenge us to look forward to His blessings now and in the future. So, let’s get into the habit of remembering His works!
