"And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."
Psalm 1:3
“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water,”
Who is “he?” Of course, “he” is the godly, blessed man from verse 1. This is the man that doesn’t get his advice from sinners, nor does he congregate with them. He is no scorner for he loves his God and His Word. This blessed man is pictured as a robust and healthy tree, a typical depiction of the godly person.
“But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever,” (Psalm 52:8).
“The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon,” (Psalm 92:12).
“Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table,” (Psalm 128:3).
“As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river’s side, as the trees of lign aloes which the LORD hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters,” (Numbers 24:6).
God’s “trees” are always planted where there is a sure and constant source of life-giving water. In the dry arid lands of the Middle East water is a necessity, and to not have it means death. God plants His “trees” near His endless flowing irrigation ditches of water. A beautiful picture of nourishment from the LORD.
“I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits: I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees,” (Ecclesiastes 2:5-6).
There is no better place for the child of God to be then to be planted by His refreshing water. Believers need a daily soaking in the “Water of the Word.”
“That bringeth forth his fruit in his season;”
This tree that is not growing wild, but is settled, planted in a garden where it can be cared for and grow, will have fruit seasonally. God’s cultivation brings forth fruit.
“His leaf also shall not wither;”
This is a healthy well-watered tree.
“And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”
God blesses His child. Real prosperity comes from our Heavenly Father. Joseph knew what it was to have God’s blessing in his life.
“And his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand,” (Genesis 39:3).
“The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper,” (Genesis 39:23).
Believer, stay in His Word and pray for His hand of blessing on your life. Wherever God plants you, grow!
